Old Boys v Venturers
Sunday 23rd May at The YMCA
By D Hawksley
The first thing to say is that the myth that it always rains when Dustin (aka Dwayne) is picked was dispelled as HOBs turned up to the YMCA on the hottest day of the year to play Venturers. The good fortune continued with Ed Davies winning the toss and electing to bat first. As Venturers took the field HOBs settled down to enjoy the good weather. What followed was a sensational batting display.
HOBs innings was opened by Ed Davies and Phil Sarjeant. The latter was the first man out being bowled for 7. There then followed an outstanding club record stand between Ed and Andy Barry. Both scored excellent 50's before Andy was dismissed for 74 which included 13 4's. This bought Jon Smith to the crease. Ed was the next wicket to fall agonisingly 7 runs short of what would have been a fine century. His innings included 16 4's. Ed was replaced by Ryan Harris who batted patiently before being dismissed for a duck. By this stage Jon had really hit his stride and finished unbeaten on 72 which included 13 fours and one 6. At the end Jon was joined by Dustin who scored a quick fire 22 which included 5 fours. At the end of the allotted 40 overs HOBs finished on a club record 289-4.
The tea which was supplied by Ash and Jon was devoured by both teams and thanks go to them for organising an exceptional spread.
For the Venturers innings the new ball was given to Anth Barrett and Paul Ashford. Both bowled tidily on what was a batsman's paradise and finished with a wicket a piece off their 8 overs. They were replaced by Dustin and Jon. Despite his advancing age Dustin bowled 7 overs without change and finished with a single wicket. Jon was replaced after 3 overs by Jimmy Osmond who bowled unchanged and claimed his first 5 wicket haul for the club. His bowling was ably assisted by some excellent catches in the outfield. Ash Fillingham also distinguished himself behind the stumps with 2 catches. The Venturers innings was rounded up by Ed who claimed 2-25 off 4 overs. However the bowling honours went to Jimmy who finished with figures of 7.4-0-40-5. Venturers were finally bowled out for 228 off 37.4 overs giving HOBs a win by 61 runs.
The tale of the HOBs fielding cannot be finished without a final mention of the weather man. Fielding at deep square leg Dustin was retrieving the ball from beyond the boundary ropes. In the action of throwing the ball underarm back to the wicket keeper he made a schoolboy error in holding on to the ball a little too long. This resulted in the ball arching over his shoulder into the garden behind. Not one of his strongest moments but it did offer some light relief!
The man of the match voting went on long into the night as there had been some excellent performances. However the vote finally went to Jimmy for his outstanding bowling.
