Match Report

Henleaze Old Boys v Octopus
Sunday 22nd June 2008 at Stoke Lodge, Coombe Dingle

By JS Smith

Sorry it's so late, but the performance and result of this match was so disappointing I couldn't bring myself to write it…Nothing to do with the fact I'm a lazy git. I shall try and recall what happened.

It was an extremely blustery day but at least the sun was out. Octopus turned up with there usual 9 players, begging and borrowing blah blah blah. Bit disappointing when they'd had 10 months to organise a team. So Leigh kindly turned out for them, graciously accepting the opportunity. (He couldn't think of a better way of thanking Stu for smashing his knee apart earlier in the season.)

Jo won the toss and elected to field, throwing the ball to Will and Anth to lead the HOB attack. A decent start ensued with Anth getting Joshi out for a duck and Will taking the grand scalp of Rocky for 19 with a lovely caught and bowled. Getting Rocky out so cheaply spurred the whole side on and the Old Boys cranked the pressure right up with some smart, sharp fielding. Jo brought himself and me (his twin) on first change. I bowled rather well picking up four for 8 but in generous swinging bowling conditions. The highlight for me obviously was the wicket of Ogilvie! Jo supported well and picked up a wicket for himself. Stu and Ed finished up with a tidy couple of overs each. We bowled Octopus out for a paltry 92, our best effort against them for a long time.

So it was with eager anticipation Henleaze took to the field for their innings. A few of us had expressed concern prior to the match regarding the strength of our batting line up, but bowling Octopus out so cheaply had certainly dispatched those fears. I am half tempted to end the match report here. Unspeakable things occurred from here on in. I will keep it brief which to be honest in not difficult…

Ed, duck.

Stu, two.

Jo in next, played very well, never looked like getting out, creaming the opposition to the boundaries.

Jo given out by idiot brother's umpiring decision from a bump ball.

Jo forced to walk off with his brother (who needed to get padded up) and smith brother bickering ensued.

Will in and looking comfortable.

Jon joins in after fall of Adams wicket.

Told by brother Jo that he needs to win the game for us or the loss will be on his head.

Jon hits four then shown the door.

Last 6 batsmen scored a combined total of 5 runs…

Will stranded on 26 not out.

This was possibly the most disappointing HOB performance of all time, certainly the most frustrating given the high quality of our fielding and bowling. Still, at the time of writing we have won every game since so it's not all doom and gloom.
